Working Principle:

1. Suction Stroke: The piston moves down, creating a vacuum in the cylinder. The inlet valve opens, allowing air to flow into the cylinder.
2. Compression Stroke: As the piston moves back up, the air is compressed. The outlet valve opens when the pressure reaches a certain level, allowing the compressed air to exit the cylinder.

Types of Reciprocating Compressors:

1. Single-Stage Reciprocating Compressor:

   • Air is compressed in a single stage.
   • Suitable for low-pressure applications (up to 150 psi).

2. Two-Stage Reciprocating Compressor:

   • Air is compressed in two stages for higher pressure (up to 200 psi and beyond).
   • More efficient for applications requiring high pressure.
